Nancy, this story is precious. I was just about to give up hope before I read that student's letter to you at the end. You really DO make a difference!
Nancy - lived a VERY similar experience facilitating a course for Northwood's DeVos program! I prominently display the email from the student who "saw" me and shared her appreciation to remind me that I authentically showed up (and spent lots of time, energy, and frustration) for all for those students and maybe, just maybe, they learned from me in spite of their resistance.
Hugs, my friend, and to all of us who put ourselves out there and TRY!
Thanks, Jacqui! We never know what happens to the seeds we spread!
This is so inspiring! Just when you think no one is listening, they shock you with what they learned. Your effort and presence is beautiful!

"overly confident and remarkably naive." - my life as a teacher (so far) in one phrase!!!!
This puts such a wonderfully fine point on the challenges educators have in teaching students trained to write for the grade, for an outcome.
Beautiful reportage, Nancy!!
