At some point I'm going to write about the following on my Substack feed, but I'm inspired to share a bit of this here. This morning, I learned for the first time that at the instant a human egg cell is fertilized by a sperm cell, a tiny spark of light erupts. Biologists call this a "zinc spark." This spark signals the beginning of a human life. I never knew this (there's much I don't know!!); however, I was profoundly moved when I read about it, because it gives a science-based foundation for Jesus's metaphor that we are "the Light of the world." This is literally, biologically true! Coupled with the fact that the odds of any one of us actually being conceived is 1 in 400 Trillion (about the same odds as winning the Powerball lottery ever day for a month), I have a newfound awe for my own life, for the existence of every other person I will encounter today, and for Life itself.
Thank you for the reflections. Similar childhood memories made me smile. Years spent reciting prayer before meals as habit without digging deeper. Thanks for the thought provoking interpretation.
